Understanding ChatGPT Plus Image and File Upload Limits

For ChatGPT Plus users, file and image uploads are an important part of daily use, especially when working with documents, screenshots, spreadsheets, research materials, or visual analysis. According to OpenAI’s current help documentation, Plus users can upload up to 80 files within a rolling three-hour period. This means the limit is not simply reset at a fixed clock time, but is calculated based on recent upload activity. In practice, if a user reaches the upload cap, they usually need to wait until part of that three-hour window has passed before uploading more files.

For image uploads, the main size restriction is 20MB per image. This applies when users upload photos, screenshots, scanned materials, or other image files directly into a ChatGPT conversation. For general file uploads, the hard limit is 512MB per file. Text and document files also have a content limit of up to 2 million tokens per file, while spreadsheets and CSV files are usually limited to around 50MB, depending on the structure and size of each row.

ChatGPT Plus also has storage-related limits. Plus and Business users currently receive 20GB of file storage. This storage applies across saved files, conversations, Projects, and Library-related usage. If a user reaches the storage cap, uploading new files may fail even if the three-hour upload frequency limit has not been reached. In that case, deleting older or unnecessary files may be necessary before new uploads can continue.

There are also separate limits for Projects. In ChatGPT Projects, Plus users can upload up to 25 files per project, and only 10 files can be uploaded at the same time. These project limits are separate from the broader file-size and upload-frequency rules. Therefore, a user may still encounter a project-specific limit even when their general upload quota has not been fully used.

It is also important to note that OpenAI may temporarily lower upload limits during periods of high demand. This means the experience may sometimes differ from the standard published limits. ChatGPT does not always show users exactly how much of their rolling upload quota remains, so when an “upload limit reached” message appears, the most practical solution is usually to wait, reduce file size, or check whether storage space has been used up. Overall, for ChatGPT Plus users, the key figures to remember are 80 files every three hours, 20MB per image, 512MB per file, and 20GB of total storage.
